Jazz, like all other cateogories of music (and subcategories, as well as those that can't really be categorized except as "other") is as varied as music itself. Likewise, my reactions to different jazz performances is also as varied, even (sometimes) when dealing with the same artist! Miles Davis, for example, while one of my all-time favorite jazz musicians (no surprise there!), sometimes enthralls me, and sometimes leaves me bored and indifferent. In the same way, some of Archie Shepp's compositions are absolutely stunning -- mindblowing, yet others leave me absolutely disinterested! The jazz songs of Natraj that I have heard and downloaded here are -- for me -- excellent. My favorite of the songs available is probably "Resolution," but the other songs are just as interesting. I like the extended nature of the compositions, which allows all of the musicians plenty of time to "wring themselves out." The concentration exhibited is quite remarkable, but the music itself it nonetheless very relaxing. In addition, like all good jazz, the songs are complex and layered enough that it is unlikely one will ever get bored with the songs even after repeated listenings.
